System wide installation

Hi,

I have just installed garnome and it looks great. Unfortunately, I can only
access it as root. The problem is that I need a system wide installation and
so I installed it to /opt/gnome. When I try to access it using an ordinary
user, there is a message about my preference files being in use already and
if I click continue, there is an error about being able to access some
random file. I am guessing the problem is to do with some permissions. If it
helps, here is the directory in /opt:

drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 Apr 18 22:41 gnome
Here are the first level of directories in /opt/gnome

drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 Apr 18 22:41 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Apr 18 21:37 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 19 01:00 bin
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 18 22:41 doc
drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 4096 Apr 19 01:01 etc
drwxr-xr-x 44 root root 4096 Apr 19 01:00 include
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 18 23:44 info
drwxr-xr-x 22 root root 12288 Apr 19 01:00 lib

drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 4096 Apr 18 21:37 man
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 18 22:33 sbin
drwxr-xr-x 38 root root 4096 Apr 19 01:00 share
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 18 21:37 src
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Apr 19 00:35 var

Thanks,

Sohail
