Tar extraction error

In the latest Garnome (0.18.0), as soon as I hit the extraction for atk,
it exits after issuing a long string of errors for the archive. The
error is: tar: Archive value 77937 is out of uid_t range 0..65535. A
web search showed a couple of people who encountered the error, but no
answer on how to fix it.
