GNOME doesn't, really. :-)

There are now two X font configuration systems. [1] The first is the
standard X one, which you configure with FontPaths in your XF86Config-4
file. That's how you handle server side fonts.

The second is Xft - X FreeType. It's the one that makes your fonts sexy and
antialiased. :-) It's configured in the XftConfig file; software that uses
this handles font issues on the client side.

You have to get your XftConfig file going properly to use fonts in GNOME2
with antialiasing -> there are lots of HOWTOs and such on the web, most of
them are probably googleable.

But that gives you a start, :-)

[1] Yes, it sucks. Keith Packard did this, realised his mistake, and is now
designing 'fontconfig' to replace them both. Yay. His talk at GUADEC was
cool. :-)
