TT Fonts....

Hi all
This is rather unrelated to garnome....
Anyway, what i wanted to know is where does gnome(2) search for
truetype fonts? I installed a set of tt fonts , and am able to use
it in apps like galeon , gtk1.2 apps , etc. but the gnome2 font
list still shows the standard "bitsream charter , Utopia , Lucidux
...etc>' fonts.
2 reboots haven't helped either...any suggestions?
