cannot open display

I have compiled gnome using garnome, but am not able to start it. I am
using SuSE 7.3 which is preconfigured to use kdm. So I try to start from
the command prompt (after killing X). After exporting LD_LIBRARY_PATH, PATH
and GDK_USE_XFT as described in the README, I exec
/opt/gnome2/bin/gnome-session, I get Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
Who helps?
