I grabbed 9.7, but I still have that same sawwfish compile problem
that
a few people complained about on the gnome.org postings for 0.9.6

(compiling sawfish/wm/server.jl)
(compiling sawfish/wm/defaults.jl)
error--> (void-value xterm-program)
make[3]: *** [lisp] Error 10
make[3]: Leaving directory

I'm using RedHat 7.2 and I wish I knew enough about lisp to debug the
problem myself. Sorry for my ignorance, but any help?

thanks in advance,

The problem was too in 9.6 I just copy one of the anser (I don't test it).

-------------------------------------------------------

The problem seems to be a missing (require) statement.

put this:

(require 'sawfish.wm.commands.xterm)

 at the bottom of the "defaults.jl" file which lives in the
gnome/sawfish/work/sawfish-2002-05-02/lisp/sawfish/wm dir and it should
compile... at least mine did.

Hope it helps..
