I strongly recommend that you DO NOT install GARNOME in /usr. It makes it a
pain to upgrade and troubleshoot, and you can't just delete the prefix and
install fresh. If you *really* want to, and you have a distribution that
does not provide packages for GNOME, then perhaps it's worth the pain.

I wouldn't. :-)
