Sound PLEASE

Ok, just finished building Garnome 0.10.6 I thought It was just me (but it turns out, it's just me ! )
I can't get any gnome2 sounds to happen. The instance gnome2 starts it's pops up a message about the mixer applet couldn't access /dev/mixer, I should check permissions or compile sound support into my kernel (the nerve of some software to suggest that I don't have sound support compiled into my kernel !! )

Every time gnome wants to make a sound it goes into 3-4 seconds of 100% cpu usage and prints the following in the console:
Audio device open for 44.1Khz, stereo, 16bit failed
Trying 44.1Khz, 8bit stereo.
Audio device open for 44.1Khz, stereo, 8bit failed
Trying 48Khz, 16bit stereo.

Sound device inadequate for Esound. Fatal.
Here are the permissios in my /dev/sound
drwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            0 Dec 31  1969 ./
drwxr-xr-x    1 root     root            0 Dec 31  1969 ../
crw-------    1 root     audio     14,   4 Dec 31  1969 audio
crw-------    1 root     audio     14,   3 Dec 31  1969 dsp
crw-------    1 root     audio     14,   5 Dec 31  1969 dspW
crw-------    1 root     audio     14,   2 Dec 31  1969 midi
crw-------    1 root     audio     14,   0 Dec 31  1969 mixer
crw-------    1 root     audio     14,   1 Dec 31  1969 sequencer
crw-------    1 root     audio     14,   8 Dec 31  1969 sequencer2

And here are the links from /dev to the midi and the mixer
lr-xr-xr-x    1 root     root           10 Jun  4 11:29 midi -> sound/midi
lr-xr-xr-x    1 root     root           11 Jun  4 11:29 mixer -> sound/mixer

So I'm thinking, it's probably an esd bug in gnome2.. so I drop into the console and give it an
esdplay /usr/share/sounds/blabla.wav
That gives me the "Sound device inadequate for Esound. Fatal." messages

I go to tty1, log in as the same user it works. So I thought it could be a path thing,,
I went back to gnome2, opened up a term, set the EXACT environment as my shell access (using source) and it still won't work.. Yes the user is a member of the audio group, and yes sound works in gnome 1.4 that accout.

I was hoping it was something that would get fixed in the new Garnome,, but it's not .. Please,, any pointers,, anywhere?

BTW, I'm on a Mandrake 8.2 ( and loving it :)
Thank you ,
