Problem compiling KDE using garnome...

KDE 3.0.2 compiled like a breeze except for one
caveat...somehow there's no support for JPEGs and
GIFs, only for PNGs. Although that's fine since my
normal work does not involve great jpgs etc I miss
some backgrounds on my desktop :)
Is there a way out?
