No AA fonts?

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but
searching this list and playing with a few things
hasn't got me very far yet.

Garnome built "out of the box" without any errors,
and adding a Gnome2 session file (as mentioned
earlier on this list) allows me to use
it from GDM, but for some reason I don't get any
AA fonts. 

GDK_USE_XFT is set to 1 (both in the bashrc and
the Gnome2 session file), but to no avail. Is
there some other config option I need to set, a
compile option, or maybe something I could check
to see what is amiss? I tried this on both a
Redhat 7.2 machine and a Redhat 7.3 one, compiled
on Monday, and both giving the same result.

I must give a big thumbs up to the garnome
builders though - I was somewhat sceptical about
whether it would build without intervention, but
it just worked (well, except the AA fonts)! Very
slick, well done.

Hoping for any helpful pointers...
