Nope. I can't even imagine why on Earth any UID should be so high.

The highest UID on my machine is 1001, and those are just two users (Debian's first is 1000, as opposed to Red Hat's 500).

Quite bizarre indeed. :) I'm gonna try it at home (which is also Debian Woody), see if I have any more luck over there. I'll post the solution here if I figure this out.
