  you can exercise gamin just though text mode work see
   http://www.gnome.org/~veillard/gamin/debug.html
if you go back to text mode (init 3) and run some gamin test, that the
kernel crashes you will see the console log. You also may be able to use
the Alt-Sysreq commands to debug what's happened to your kernel.
To debug kernel problems the first thing is to drop off X11 which hides all
kernel console logs.
