How to get the orbs of SameGnome back?

Hello,

I and our children were recently disappointed to find that the orbs of 
SameGnome have been lost. Why on earth did you guys change the 
good-looking orbs of SameGnome to the plain squares of Swell Foop, 
without any option to use "legacy graphics" or anything?

I found some old news message (of ver 2.29.1) saying that SameGnome was 
ported to Seed/Clutter
and the name was changed to Swell Foop. Did that mandate the change in 
graphics?  I protest against such platform/engine changes being done at 
the expense of user experience...

Now, with the complaints/rebukes given, what are my options for getting 
the orbed version back? Should I try to compile the last version before 
2.29.1?   The last tag before 2.29.1 in GIT repository seemed to be 2.28.1.
