Re: Menu names and placement

Suppose gnome-games were reduced to 8 games (which would be tragic).
Then a distro adds a couple others like Tuxracer (good to verify
installation of 3D drivers) and some other popular stuff. You get a
large menu very fast. I like that FC3 comes with 20 games. I did check
the "games" box on the installer you know. I just want a little more
organization. The submenus will help finding things even with unfamiliar
names, while providing a standard menu structure for all games. I'm not
asking for *deep* menus, just a 3rd level under games.

3rd party games will never create a meaningful menu structure. They
aren't going to reorganize existing games in the menu and creating a
submenu for themself is just stupid (see windows where everyone creates
a submenu with their company name). IMHO it is fundamental to define
this menu structure so others can follow rather than make the mess
worse. Gnome-games has enough variety to nicely fill out 4 categories
with 3-5 games each. It would be an excellent start to illustrate how
nice a games menu can be. Someone has to do it other than the end user.
At the very least, please try it on your own desktop to see how much
better it can be.

Thanks for listening,
Paul

As far as subdividing the menus goes, some of the distros are pushing
for a smaller games menu too (when you have KDE games installed as
well
it extends beyond the edge of the screen, and half the programs begin
with K). Unfortunately I don't think they want deep menus either. i.e.
they want to remove some games, I have explained that whichever game I
remove, someone will be coming after me with an axe, but they don't
seem
to care :). Also, subdividing the games would require some
coordination
between us, KDE, and the distro people. This is possible, but I
haven't
got around to it.
