Re: jabber.gnome.org: a proposal

I will get in contact with the FSF about this and try to find out which software they use, how they've set it up etc.

As for now our jabberd runs on a very old machine which is ready to be recycled and pulled out from our rack. I feel it makes no point in migrating it somewhere else as it is now for the following reasons:

1. It's running an outdated jabberd
2. it's binded to LDAP, which isn't what we want till Foundation members get added there with their own attributes.
3. It's half broken and many functionalites are missing as Shaun pointed out.

I feel that as soon as other important items are set, I'll focus on setting up a new jabberd istance with all the functionalities we need (that if we won't find any suitable solution in the meantime). That said, the machine that is currently hosting it will be shutdown within 14 days. Everything gets backed up every night so nothing will be lost, expect some more news to come about this topic in the near future or as soon as I deal with Bugzilla 4.4 :-)

Have an awesome day,

I think notices like this provide impetus for having keeping our xmpp services available:

If the quality of the server software we're using is an issue, perhaps we could check with the FSF to see what kind of setup they are using. I would suspect that they would be willing to offer such information. : )
