CEO Goals & Bonuses

Foundation Members:

Last January, I provided an email to the foundation-list to explain the
process which was used to define CEO goals and the CEO bonus structure
that had been used up until that time. Refer here to refresh your
memory:

http://mail.gnome.org/archives/foundation-list/2010-January/msg00114.html

After discussing this for some time and spending the past few weeks
digesting the comments and survey results, the board has put together
the following proposal for the CEO goals and bonus plan for the upcoming
year. This reflects the survey which highlighted that many Foundation
members feel that focusing on making GNOME 3.0 a success is of highest
priority, that we should focus less on fund raising, and that the goals
should be more clearly for "above & beyond" work rather than for doing
what might be considered day-to-day activities.

The board wanted to share this proposal with the Foundation members to
get any final feedback or suggestions on how to improve it before it is
finalized.

Thanks!

Summary
=======

The CEO total yearly bonus is $24,000. Bonuses will be paid for doing
work that goes "above & beyond" and not for activities that are expected
in the normal day-to-day job.

Breakdown:

- 25% Fund raising
- 25% GNOME 3
- 25% Community building
- 25% Eyes and ears

Fund Raising
============

25% = $6,000 maximum

 + Friends of GNOME ($1,500)

   + Grow FoG ($1,000)
+ Aiming to grow 200%, for a maximum bonus of $1000 using this
formula: (% of growth) * 5. So if FoG grows 100% the bonus is
$500, and so on. This pragmatically means the bonus is $5 per new
subscriber. If this goal is met, we would be in for $30,000
of FoG subscribers revenue per year.

+ Launch a new FoG campaign to incentive subscriptions from end users
     ($500)
+ Based on research, most FoG donations come from end-users, but
the GNOME community does not yet effectively market FoG to end
users. If an effective campaign aimed at GNOME end users is
successfully launched which brings in at least $5000 via
subscriptions, the bonus will be $500. This campaign needs to
be managed in a way that funds received via the campaign can be
clearly identified as funds generated by this campaign.

 + Increase revenue ($4,500)

+ Increase revenue via new Advisory Board membership, Grants, or
finding other new sources of revenue. This bonus will only be
paid out at the end of the fiscal year and only if the GNOME
Foundation made more money than it did in the previous year. For
each $10,000 of additional income that the CEO played a
significant role in acquiring, the CEO will be paid $450. This
has a maximum bonus of $4,500 for bringing in $50,000.

GNOME 3
=======

25% = $6,000 maximum

+ Manage the GNOME 3.0 Marketing Campaign ($2,000)
+ GNOME 3.0 will require putting together marketing material, press
releases, promotion, speaking at events. Since much of the
specific work is difficult to forsee, the board will provide up to
a $2,000 bonus based on to what degree the CEO went "above &
beyond" to make GNOME 3.0 a sucess.

 + Managing a Successful Release ($2,000)
+ Ensuring that GNOME 3.0 is a success will require project
management. It is hard to predict what specific issues will
require work, but the board will provide up to a $2,000 bonus
based on to what degree the CEO went "above & beyond" to make the
     GNOME 3.0 a successful and on-time release.

 + Managing the Press ($2,000)
+ It is important to get good media coverage for GNOME 3.0 in
magazine articles, radio, TV, etc. The board will provide up to a
$2,000 bonus based on the amount of work and success of getting
GNOME 3.0 noticed by the media.

Note that by "successful release" we mean a release that is well
marketed (before, during, and after the launch) with good press
management, and well orchestrated so that all the teams are working
together to make the release a success. Expectations should be set
right and teams should be working well together towards bringing
everything together in a reasonable timeframe. This will involve
working with the GNOME advisory board and distributions to ensure that
GNOME 3 is included in offerings within a reasonable timeframe (which
may vary depending on uncontrollable factors). After the release,
efforts should be made to do surveys and other means to gain
perspective about how well GNOME 3 is received, and to address
concerns discovered. We anticipate that the CEO will be involved with
many project management duties to make this a success.

Community Building
==================

25% = $6,000 maximum

 + Improving GNOME infrastructure ($2,000)
+ Over the past year there has been much improvement to GNOME
infrastructure. The marketing team, and event planning are now
running much more smoothly, for example. However, many parts of
the GNOME community are still not working as effectively as they
could. Establishing more clear structure for the GNOME community,
better communication channels, more clearly defined
responsibilities, and better cooperation are the sorts of tasks
which fall into this category. The CEO can receive up to a $2,000
bonus for making significant improvements to GNOME infrastructure.

 + GNOME Mobile ($2,000)
+ The GNOME project has suffered from some setbacks in the Mobile
space recently. The CEO can receive up to a $2,000 bonus for
doing work that goes above & beyond to create a more clear GNOME
mobile product and working with partners to increase adoption and
     sale of GNOME mobile technologies.

 + Developing World ($2,000)
+ The CEO can receive up to a $2,000 bonus for doing work that
significantly improves relationships between the GNOME community
and the developing world, and for increasing adoption of GNOME
     in the developing world.

Eyes And Ears
=============

25% = $6,000

 + CRM ($2,000)
+ The CEO can receive up to a $2,000 bonus for getting the CRM
system to a state where it is a useful tool for ongoing GNOME
     business.

 + Marketing Asssets ($2,000)
+ Getting a useful and complete set of marketing assets compiled for
public use is something the GNOME community badly needs. This
includes establishing branded press packets, GNOME-branded
slides, providing branding tools, making sure that marketing
presentations are shared in a common repository, and materials
for the event box. A bonus of $2,000 will be paid for
significantly transforming GNOME marketing assets so that they
are complete, effective, useful, and publicly available.

 + Discretionary ($2,000)
+ The board reserves $2,000 of the bonus to be purely discretionary
and will be rewarded based on accomplishments that fall outside
     of the tasks listed above.
