I remember reading that there is a draft ietf spec for this, actually
first written by Apple, for use with Mac's; Microsoft picked up on it,
tweaked it a bit. But the spec appearently is less than satisfactory
(flakes out when you finally add a firewall or real router to the net)
so Alan's algo doesn't seem worse.
