Installation of Bitstream Vera Sans

When downloading GoogleEarth to my Fedora7, I was prompted to install
Bitstream Vera Fonts and pointed at www.gnome.org/fonts/
I did find fonts to download in different formats but no advise which
format to use and no instructions for how and where to install.

Can you help?

Unless I am missing something, it might be a good idea to add a clear
"Installation HowTo" on the webpage.
