I've put them into /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-bitstream-vera, other
distributions might have different layouts for /usr/share/fonts of
course.

Yes, that's what the Debian fontconfig maintainer recommended some time
ago, too, so that's what I'm doing (if fontconfig is available; for
people wanting to use them directly they're also registered with
Debian's defoma).
