In theory you shouldn't have to alias gmcs to mcs. gmcs is more of a relic these days. Having said that though, you do need a fairly new version of mono (I don't have a number off the top of my head).

What version of mono do you have? If you can get up to 4.x you won't need anything like gmcs, etc).

Have you tried just aliasing gmcs to mcs?  I've run into that on some of my attempts, and that has let me get much further.  However, I'm not sure if that is completely valid, as I have not yet completed  the entire process.
