Anyway, those things are not something that there will be time for
anyways, but it might influence the design decisions.

Not to throw water on your enthusiasm, but doesn't Conduit (for example) already provide some of the functionality you're looking for? Perhaps your GSOC project could involve helping to beef up the F-Spot support in Conduit, rather than rolling your own solution from the ground up?
