First, geotagging without a map widget is IMHO useless.
No, it's definitely not useless.
You can geotag using GPS traces and with the geotagged position you can
find the name of the city/region/country/area where the photo was taken
(Reverse Geocoding). This can be written into metadata and searched for.
(see for example http://geotag.sourceforge.net/?q=node/19)
There is even another use case: Upload a KML/KMZ kind of trace with
embedded/linked photos for sharing. This would mean using a web based
map for display instead of a local map widget.
