Scratch that. Sorted.
I've selectively restored from old backups that I had (forgotten about)
for photos.db. Furthermore I've tracked the culprit down to the jpeg
rotated in gthumb as reported in
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=635465

Reproducible every time on my system by giving date range of 1/1/0001 to
1/1/0001. Note that this is precise; 1/1/0002 is OK. As is 1/2/0001 to
1/2/0001. Browsing to oldest thumbnail also causes it consistently.
As noted earlier, selecting range 1/2/0001 to 1/1/2050 is ok but
f-spot reports
disparity of 38 unaccounted photos. Perhaps I have 38 photos somehow
associated
with 1/1/0001?
Is there anyway I can track this down? Perhaps duff entries in my
database that I could fix/delete with a bit of SQL?
Dougie
