Cannot build F-spot 0.5.0.3 from tarball.

Hello F-spotters! After a long break from F-spot I have decided to
give the latest released version a try. However, even with the build
dependencies met, the ./configure script complains that it cannot find
a C# compiler (wouldn't a C# compiler be mono itself?):

...snip...
checking for MONO_DEPENDENCY... yes

checking for mono... /usr/bin/mono
checking for mcs... no
configure: error: No C# compiler found
configure: error: ./configure failed for gio-sharp

Now I confirm that I have the dependencies as stated on the F-spot website:
