For other people who want to upgrade f-spot,
Debian unstable had only 0.4.4-1
so I found an ubuntu 0.5.0.1 build on:
http://www.soccio.it/michelinux/2008/09/21/new-f-spot-050-build-for-ubuntu/en/
But from what Bengt is saying, I need to build from
http://ftp.gnome.org/Public/GNOME/sources/f-spot/0.5/f-spot-0.5.0.3.tar.bz2
after patching with Fspot.Trunk.svn.diff found in:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=116868

For the moment you will need to patch the F-Spot trunk as well.
Do that one first. There is a patch included in the extension for that.
