I must be applying the patch wrong. I already had/have svn 3699 installed in my home directory. I tried it and all of these functions do work.

I guess I need to learn how to properly install the patch or learn how to install the svn version system wide.

you should either patch your source
(see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=517193) or check out
FSPOT_0_4_2_STABLE from svn.
