indeed it is. It would be nice if we could tell it to import from the
memory card before it renders previews of all the images. Does this
functionality exist? I haven't tried for a while now...

There is a patch for this: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=169646
The bug report is labeled as "NEW", but it has been around for years.
Maybe it will be committed soon.

Not that I know of, but other user's could probably provide more info.
I think that for a while the thumbnails were generated on-the-fly, so
the whole image had to be loaded from the memory card. I'm not sure,
but I think it should first check Jpeg files for embedded thumbnails
and use those.

This seems like something you'll have to manage yourself. How would
f-spot know if you actually wanted to reimport the photo? (eg. maybe
you overwrote the original with an edit, and want the original back).
Rather, perhaps you will have to start clearing your memory card (at
least those images you deleted from f-spot).

Perhaps you could share? Or maybe someone could modify the import code
so you can import before all the thumbnails are generated.
