Just had a quick look at it, and as you say it is work in progress.
Looking promising so far though, but could use some extra touch-up on
the gui (proper labels, could select individual photo, rotate individual
photo etc). 
As you stated, F-Spot could use a compare function, and the feature
request for it is here http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=306958

Looking forward to see the rest of the patch :)
