For jpegs It reads and writes XMP and reads IPTC it simply doesn't use
that data during import at the moment. Other formats have varying levels
of support but reading works on most.  Additionally If you turn on
metadata writing in the preferences it will write all the tags as
cd:Subject rdf triples in the xmp data on formats where is supports XMP
writing (jpeg and png at the moment).  Beagle also indexes this data so
you can preform searches using beagle on any file with XMP data.  Right
now it only indexes a couple of elements but I will happily fix that if
people want to come up with a list of widely used and valuable xmp
predicates.  

I'd like to add more support at import soon but I'm extremely busy at
the moment and haven't had time for f-spot hacking in a while.
