Unable to edit photos

Anytime I try to edit a photo (crop, colors, etc.) I get an error
dialog titled "Error editing photo". In the case of attempting to crop
a photo the body of the dialog says "Received exception "Argument
cannot be null. Parameter name: src" Unable to save image
DSCN9567.jpg". This is on a 64-bit Gentoo Linux installation.
