Mostly I use the next/prev button in the dialog, I use to hate the traditional way of a pop-up dialog which hides the text behind it, and i started liking some apps (some windows app, i forgot which), which moved the placement of the find dialog, if it hides the selected search string. But a big issue is that, i have to move the mouse to the new placement of the dialog, to find the next string. The big advantage with firefox is that, it just has bar at the bottom, which has a stationary bar and that too doesnt hides the data. 
It could be slightly new for a first-time user but on the long run, it serves better. This is  my personal view.

Most of your complaints seem to center on the placement of the search
bar at the bottom of the window, rather than the difference between an
embedded search bar and a search dialog.  Or at least that's my
impression.

If that is the gist of your complaint, I suggest that's not a good way
to evaluate the patch, since it's only a small factor in the overall
change in the interaction with the user.

In fact, 95% of the time, I search without looking at the search bar
at all when using Firefox.  I can see out of the corner of my eye if
there have been hits or not, by the color change, and if I do find
what I'm looking for, I don't need to look at the bar since the hits
are highlighted on my screen and show me what I've typed.  With
regards to that user behavior, placement at the bottom makes more
sense, since it disturbs the document I'm searching in the least (by
your own arguments, I'm probably looking at the top of the document).
