I'm doing this because it's being used for a function that's expecting a "char" pointer rather than a "gchar" pointer.

Should I still use glib functions on non-glib types? Or should I use glib-types and cast them to non-glib types?

hmm, just realized than in this patch and the previous one you're using
malloc, instead of g_malloc or g_new. So, looks good, except for that,
