looks good to me, however, I have 1 question:

in the case that the numeric address is IPv6, the EHLO command we need
to send is (assuming I am remembering correctly):

EHLO [IPv6:<addr>]\r\n

do you know if the "IPv6:" string gets prepended to the addr string when
appropriate by the getnameinfo() function?

either way this patch is more correct than what is currently there so I
think we can commit regardless.
