Please hold it off for now on stable, since it breaks string freeze.

Actually, we should probably just pull the plug on string freeze
breaking changes at this point.  Let's just commit this kind of changes
to HEAD only from now on.

(This is not a permission to commit, Anna should review the changes
first. :))
