*sigh*..

clearly we need to change the behaviour of *something*. My original
solution was to just make Edit->Mark as Unread also undelete the msg,
just like the message-list toggle. but everyone told me that was the
wrong behaviour and that setting as unread should not cause the message
to get undeleted.

in fact, you went on to say that you shouldn't be able to change the
status of deleted messages at all, which is clearly not what you meant,
seeing as how if we really *did* implement things that way, there'd be
no way to *undelete* :-)

imho, we should at least be consistant. I don't agree that this was the
way to fix things either, but that's not what it sounded like what you
wanted yesterday...
