FWIW This is just a solution i came up with, because of the copious
reasons given in the bug report, changelog and email with the patch ...
(i think 3 explanations should be enough).

I haven't committed it yet anyway, since its obvously not acceptable, so
feel free to suggest an alternative and i can look into it.
