[Evolution] 3.44.1-0ubuntu1 not importing contacts

I exported the addressbook from an older laptop into a vcard file. I
moved it to my new ubuntu 22-04 laptop. In 3.44 I did the import, and
the entries showed OK in the little import window. I hit "APPLY" and
nothing seems to happen, and there are no contacts showing.  thanks in
