Presumably that the answer to your question is that it's a long
standing feature request that is still outstanding.  That sort of thing
is not uncommon - developer time is limited and something that doesn't
get much traction suffers.  The bug report has had very few comments
and nothing, as you say, for over 8 years - it's not going to be high
up on the priorities since not many users seem to be bothered by it.

If it's important to you, comment on the bug.
