[Evolution] Japanese writing does not work in Evolution

kubuntu 14;04 LTS, English US as default language
evolution 3.10.4
input sytem IBUS & anthy
all needed Japanese language packs are installed - at least I think so.

I can write Japanese in KMail perfectly fine, the same in Mousepad, but I cannot in Evolution.
When I switch to Japanese mode, no character at all is to be seen in Evolution.

What do I need to do to enable Japanese writing in Evolution?

If more information is needed, please let me know what is needed and how to get it. I am newbie to
Linux.
