OK I fixed it.

Deleted my old account and set up a new account with a totally fictitious
name using my real credentials.  It then (finally) asked me for my password
and started to collect mail.  I then changed my account back to my proper
name whereupon Evo suddenly shut down.  On re-opening, everything was and
still is fine.

It's a bit sad when the deletion of an account leaves settings in the
keyring.  Those settings should be deleted at the time.
