[Evolution] Emails not in rubbish bin when deleted.

I have a mysterious problem where emails deleted from the inbox do not appear in the rubbish bin.

When I click the rubbish bin icon in the left hand pane, for the briefest moment, a list appears, but then vanishes, leaving only three emails visible.

How can I retrieve the contents of my rubbish bin?
