I suspect this isn't true.  I never run gconf-editor, but if I understand the settings right, plain text mail, like this should appear in 14 point type, which it doesn't.  Maybe my system is missing the required font -- I'm weak on fonts too.  Images of gconf-editor and this email, as an example of font display are attached.
