there is a bug report [1] about the same for preformatted paragraphs,
which didn't wrap lines when printing. This is fixed in current stable.
I suppose your issue is the same.

Thanks for the pointer, but this bug report talks about HTML messages; the
message in question was just plain text (I checked the source of the
mail);
the problem seems to be related to a wrong DPI information which was set
for some unknow reason in 'gnome-appearance-properties'; the value there
was 230, while it should be 146 for my display; after changing it to the
correct value, the printing is fine again;
