Re: [Evolution] Changing Port 25 to Port 587

For me, the server is outgoing.verizon.net

No mail or smtp in the hostname.

Phil & Kojak.t,
Using plain, TSL & SSL encryption, messages are received but no mail
is sent, the window just sits there. Authentication is checked or not
the results are the same. If I change the outgoing server from
mail.XXX.com to smtp.mail.XXX.com it attempts to send the mail but
has the following error message "Host lookup failed:
smtp.mail.XXX.com: Name or service not known" and is the only error
message I can get otherwise it sits there regardless of how long I
wait (several minutes).

Thanks,

John

My ISP (Verizon) changed the rules for sending email. They now require
using port 587 to send email instead of the default port 25. I have made
the change on my 2 windows machines using Eudora 7 with ease but getting
Evolution to work has been a problem. It still received email but will
not send. I have changer the SMTP server name to include :587 at the end
but still no luck. I am running Ubuntu 8.1o on the desktop and 8.04 on
the netbook with the same results.

What error are you getting?

You most likely need to enable SMTP auth.

Phil
