Debian Evolution doesn't seem to do that.  Must I 'activate'
the addressbook somehow?


In the "Edit" menu select "Preferences". In the "Preferences" dialog
select "Autocompletion" and then in the right pane check all the address
books that you want to use for autocompletion. It even works with LDAP
address books.
