What about Edit / Select Thread (Ctrl-H) and then delete?

Two possible alternatives would be:
1) An accelerator for "go to the head of the current thread".
2) Shift-Ctrl-H for "select the entire thread".
I *really* do love this one. Filed, feel free to add comments.

My $0.02 worth. Use an accelerator key to collapse all or expand all.
Use the prefix triangle, as now, to collapse or expand individual
threads.
If a thread is expanded, then delete, read, flag etc. applies to only
the selected item; if the thread is collapsed, then delete, read, flag
etc. applies to the selected thread and all its children.
As well, a user should be able to select several individual items using
shift or control, as now, and delete, read, flag etc. those items as a
group. The same should apply to a group of threads.
That's what I think.
