Another stab ... try rm -rf /tmp/orbit-(your user name), and then
re-login (do it from a non-x session, if you can).

The error message are repeated until I kill the process.
At the same time, firefox fails, with similar error messages:

Other users can run both evolution and firefox on the machine.  I tried
deleting the ~/.gconf/apps/evolution folder, but evolution still fails. 
I'm running evolution 1.4 on redhat enterprise.  Any ideas?
