Why do you have differnet users then?  you should only log on as a normal user to do any desktop tasks, use su if you need root, and redirect root's email to you via an alias.

What you're trying to do, at leas tthe way you're trying to do it goes against linux's security model - and is supposed to not work.

Also, if I use evolution to access my mail as one user, it won't access
it as another user after I logout and login as a different user (or
root) unless I reboot.  How do I fix that?
