I've forwarded this to the ops.  I wouldn't hold my breath though, as they probably have more important things to do, and if the mailing list archive software doesn't just have a switch to turn it on, it might be a pita to implement.

(imo, 1-2MB/month isn't really much to download anyway)

I second that.

Anyway, during the past 12 months, so much has changes that it isn't
particular useful to have anything older. Which sums up to about 15-20
MByte worth of monthly archived files.

Thus, a compressed archive per month would make sense too. :)
