[Evolution] How to get 1.4.6 to see splash.png, button images, icons, etc?

I just tried installing evolution using the directions on ximian.com 
(wget ...) but it won't run properly (this on SuSE 9.0).  Starting from 
a bash prompt I see lots of odd errors, the start of which follows this 
msg.  Any clues what I've got wrong here?

Btw:  Evolution does appear, but with no button images and no toolbar 
images.  Also the /opt/gnome/share/evolution/1.4/images/ directory 
appears to be fully populated and accessible (I *can* load the 
splash.png into gimp just fine).
